Leading Change: Assessing Innovation in Schools

If there is a constant in education, it is change. Innovations come in many forms in our schools - instructional frameworks and curricula, professional learning programs, emerging technologies; the list continues. While most schools are familiar with adopting and diffusing innovations, fewer are adept at evaluating the impact of these innovations against their intended outcomes, namely student learning. An impact evaluation of innovation is a process for determining the extent that innovation has had a direct impact on students or other stakeholders within a school (Killion, 2018). This workshop will develop school leaders’ capabilities understanding the basic tenets and types of program evaluation, developing theories of change and logic models, and constructing an evaluation framework. These skills will be applicable to any school or organization hoping to realize returns on the investments they make through the innovations they adopt. Who is it for? Individuals directly involved with organizational change at any level, within any organization. What will you do? Build an understanding of evaluation and how it differs from research Design the diffusion of innovation using a backwards design model by developing a theory of change and logic model from the onset Determine if innovation is valuable Develop the skills to assess an innovation’s impact on teacher/student learning Increase organizational capacity and to promote an “evaluation think” mindset What will you walk away with? A toolkit to design organizational shifts to be valuable from the onset Actionable strategies to lead change in any organization Renewed purpose and vigour about leading and managing change within your organization.
