      East Anglia Family Business Forum 2019

      Join us in Newmarket for our regional family business conference that seeks not only to bring the family business together but also provides a great opportunity to discuss some of the unique challenges facing family firms and to hear insights from other family business people and their advisers who have already dealt with some of these challenges too. As well as some great speakers providing great insights there will be a mini expo during the networking breaks showcasing some fantastic businesses and their products and there is plenty of time for networking too. The Forum runs from 9.30 am until 3.30 pm inclusive of a networking lunch and full hospitality. THE PROGRAMME: 9.30 - Welcome Address - Paul Andrews, Family Business United 9.45 - Opening Keynote - A Personal Journey & Evolution Of A Family Business Derrick Potter is the Executive Chairman of the Potter Group, a family firm that has been around for over 50 years.  From their humble beginnings transporting grain and fertiliser across local routes to becoming a full-service logistics company with a string of Awards under their belt, they pride ourselves on developing great partnerships with their customers, on moving with the times, investing in both technology and people and, listening to the needs of our customers.  Integrity, relationships, openness and honesty, and the desire to succeed have always been central to the Potter philosophy and these values are very much alive today within Potter Space.  Derrick will share the journey that this family business has been on and how they are planing for the next stages in its evolution. 10.25 - An Audience With Sean Milbank, Milbank Group The Milbank Group traces its history back to the 1820s when G Milbank & Son, a builder and undertaker, was first established in Howe Street, near Chelmsford, Essex. Whilst today they are no longer builders or undertakers, different generations of Milbank’s have developed various businesses that are connected with the construction industry; ranging from precast concrete products and concrete crushing equipment, to self-off-load hauliers, off site manufacturing systems and even composting technology. Today, the privately owned Group acts as an investment company, acquiring and investing in UK businesses. As a business with family values they look to the long term and are committed to retaining, nurturing and developing the businesses they invest in.  Paul Andrews will interview Sean Milbank, the current generation at the helm to gain an insight into life within this innovative and diversified group. 11.00 - Coffee and Networking 11.30 - The Family Business Sector & The Challenges They Face Today A panel discussion around some of the challenges facing family firms in the region using the findings from some of the latest research.   Our panel conprises a number of representatives from family businesses including: Jessica Gozzett (Group Financial Controller - Quest Motor Group) Quest Motor Group is the oldest Vauxhall dealership in Essex and one of the oldest privately funded Vauxhall dealers in the UK, it still remains in the private ownership of the Gozzett family with the 5th generation all taking an active role in the day to day running of the business. Today they employ a team of staff in excess of 75, and all team members are dedicated to offering an exceptional customer experience which will ensure that the Quest Group remains privately owned and funded by the Gozzett family for future generations. Michelle Jarrold  (Development Director - Jarrold) Through the reigns of nine monarchs, massive changes in the world of retail and other businesses, and two World Wars, Jarrold has played a part in the lives of generations of Norfolk families. The roots of the Jarrold business were in shopkeeping, it then developed to become a leading printer and publisher during the 19th and 20th centuries. Today the business is concentrated on retail activities in Norwich and its branches in Norfolk, and property development and business services in the city. Adam Jones (Partner - Birketts LLP) Adam is the head of family business and a partner at Birketts LLP. 12.30 - Closing Keynote - A.R. Adams - A Family Business With Purpose A.R. Adams Funeral Directors are based in Rayleigh and Southend (Thorpe Bay) serving both locations and the surrounding areas. Established in 1900 and now in its 5th Generation, they are dedicated professionals who provide a personal service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Family values are at the heart of this family firm that was crowned East and East Anglia Family Business of the Year 2019.  Hear from the fifth generation about the values that they uphold as a family firm and how they have survived the generations, becoming an award winning family firm at the heart of the community. 1.00 - Lunch Furthermore, there are workshops running in the afternoon (2.00-3.30 pm) that can be booked separately focusing on core challenges for the family business sector: Workshop 1 - Succession Planning UnwrappedThis session is being facilitated by Birketts LLP and will explore the challenge of succession, why it is so important to address the issues for the benefit of the family and the business, the options available and some practical tips on what can be done in advance, whatever the transition that is being considered. Workshop 2 - Health & Wellbeing in The Family FirmThis session is being facilitted by Century Office Supplies with Steve Bays facilitating a session around health and wellbeing in all regards. Joining the session will be Sarah Bays, Katrina Love, Luke Jackman and Sam Lindley who will offer different insights into the topic and cover areas such as mental health, office ergonomics and modern approaches to the working day in what is essentially a Developmental, Emotional, Economic and Physical (DEEP) dive into Wellbeing in the workplace. Workshop 3 - Creating A Family Business ConstitutionThis session is being facilitated by Birketts LLP and will address the role and purpose of a family constitution, the benefits, the key things that tend to be included and the value that can be dervied from the prociess of actually creating one. Workshop 4 - Cyber Security & The Family BusinessThis session is being facilitated by React Computer Partners, a family business, and will address some of the challenges around cyber security,  the scale of the issues facing family firms, the need for vigilance, educating staff and sensible approaches to monitoring.  There will be plenty of practical tips and suggestions as well as time for questions during the interactive session too.
