      cJAM: Language and Global 2020

This event is NOT open to the general public and is exclusively for University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) students, staff and invited industry guests.   Are you a final year undergraduate or postgraduate UCLan student? Do you want a taste of your future career? cJAM: Language and Global is an exciting careers jamming event which enables students in the School of Language and Global Studies to meet face-to-face with senior industry professionals, to share ideas, make connections and pitch for opportunities.  You get to spend an entire day with successful industry professionals who will be sharing their top tips and offering placements to help you launch your career. This is a full-day event, where your attendance is required from 9.30am until 4.30pm.  The event includes: FREE breakfast and lunch Giant speed pitching session Chance to win industry placements Industry guest speakers Industry Q&A panel Networking throughout The industry guests play an integral role in the event. For the speed pitching session, they all come with the offer of at least one work placement – these could be anything from one-day shadowing opportunities through to 4-week long placements. At the event, the industry guests award their placements to the students who impress them the most. This is the first year for the cJAM: Language and Global event, however the cJAM event format has been long established at UCLan. At last year's cJAM events in journalism, media, performance and law students secured 320 placements with a range of employers including the BBC, ITV, MUTV, Curious Minds, The Lowry, Warwick Arts Centre, Super Slow Way, Weber Shandwick, TT Games, Wash Media and Corporation Pop.  To get a flavour of the cJAM event format look at last year's videos:cJAM: Journalism videocJAM: Media videocJAM: Performance videocJAM: Law video With Language and Global Studies graduates appealing to a broad range of sectors, even if you don't win a placement on the day, by attending this event you will gain a deeper understanding of where your transferable skills could add value and take you to after graduation. FAQs Placements Placements are likely to be unpaid and will last for no longer than four weeks and no shorter than a one-day shadowing opportunity. If you win a placement you will be awarded it on the day by the industry guest, then during the following week you will receive an email from the University with the industry guest's contact details.  It will then be down to you to make contact with them to confirm the start date and other details about your placement.  At previous cJAM events, some students won multiple placements and some didn't win any.  Preparation is key - ensure you do some research about the industry guests and their companies so that you make the best possible impression.   Speed pitching logistics Pitching slots are bookable as you arrive on the day and there is likely to be a limit to the amount you can book. Each of our industry guests will have a numbered pitching station and you will get to choose who you want to see and when – a bit like what your parents/guardians had to do at parents evening in school. But it's alot more fun obviously - there's a definte speed dating feel, you are sat across from the person you are pitching to and after eight munutes a siren will sound and you move on. The speed pitching part of the event lasts for two hours and there are 12 slots, each lasting just eight minutes.   Speed pitching contentYou should develop and practice an elevator pitch.  These typically last up to 60 seconds and if delivered at the start of each pitch it will help spark questions and natural conversation with the industry people. Make sure you tailor part of your elevator pitch for each company you want to pitch to - this will impress them and show you have done your research.  The University has an online Elevator Pitch Builder tool you can use.  Go to: The Student Portal / CareerEDGE / Popular Tools / Elevator Pitch Builder. CVBring multiple copies of your CV so you can give one to every industry guest you pitch to. Dress code Smart casual clothing is expected, don’t come in a prom suit but leave your hoodie at home.
