      WhatWorksSC Award Celebration 2019

      Ninth Annual Dick & Tunky Riley WhatWorksSC Award for Excellence A celebration of what works in public education   Presented by The Riley Institute at Furman and Aflac   On November 12, 2019, Furman University’s Riley Institute will host the ninth annual WhatWorksSC Award Celebration.  Special guest and former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and former U.S. Secretary of Education Dick Riley will have an on-stage conversation about current issues in public education.Secretary Riley and presenting sponsor Aflac will name the winner and honor the finalists at the celebration. The award is named for Secretary Riley and his late wife, Ann “Tunky” Riley, a dedicated teacher and passionate advocate for quality public education. This year’s finalists are: Carolina Teacher Induction Program, a University of South Carolina program, is designed to be a bridge support program for new teachers as they transition from university student to leading and teaching in a classroom of their own. Pickens County Career and Technology Center, is a center where faculty work diligently to help students develop the skills for success in college and the workplace by encouraging students to explore their talents and interests, and then identify career opportunities that match those skills and interests. Learn more about the Pickens County Career and Technology Center.  WINGS for Kids, is a comprehensive, high-quality afterschool initiative designed to equip at-risk K-5th grade kids with the skills they need to succeed in school, stay in school, and thrive in life. Learn more about WINGS for Kids.  The three finalists for the 2019 award were selected from applications received earlier in the year.
