      Description

Each performance of Swamp Gravy is an original, crowd-pleasing blend of comedy, drama, and music featuring a cast of more than 100 volunteers who transform southern life into unforgettable theater. These volunteers—who are the backbone of all of the efforts of the arts council—break down the walls that are racial and socio-economic boundaries to bring to life the stories that have helped shape our community. All of Swamp Gravy's plays are based on real-life stories, taken from taped interviews and adapted for the stage by a playwright. Each year a new script and original music are written and re-enacted by an amateur cast, who give performances of professional quality in an effort to celebrate a culture that is uniquely rural South Georgia. Swamp Gravy has been gaining national attention since its inception. As a testament to that authenticity, the state's general assembly designated Swamp Gravy as the "Official Folk Life Play of Georgia" thanks to the efforts of then Rep. Cathy Cox, who is now the Secretary of State for the state of Georgia. Other distinctions for Swamp Gravy include gaining recognition as a designated Cultural Olympiad event in 1996, as well as being selected to perform at the Kennedy Center that same year. When performing in its native Colquitt, Georgia, Swamp Gravy is at home in its own theater, located inside a 60-year-old renovated cotton warehouse now aptly known as Cotton Hall. This fully-equipped facility maintains its rustic flavor while offering state-of-the-art lighting, set design and multi-level staging. Cotton Hall itself is a tourist attraction. In addition to its theater, Cotton Hall houses a gift shop, the Museum of Southern Cultures, and a Commons area. From rafters to floor, the design of the theater enables every guest of Swamp Gravy to take a journey into the world that was and is South Georgia. To experience the play that “…united a town and moved a nation,” please call us at 1-229-758-5450.
