      EVENT DETAILS
CERL Public Day / Laboratory Tours

The U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) will offer laboratory tours to the public August 29, 2019 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (CDST) to help commemorate 50 years of service to the Nation.   About CERL: CERL is one of seven laboratories of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), headquartered in Vicksburg, Mississippi. CERL researchers work in collaboration with other ERDC labs, government partners, industry and academia to develop technologies for the Army’s current and future force while also benefiting the private and public sectors where no similar applications and capabilities exist.   Tours will include an overview of CERL and a walking tour of facilities including the laboratory's 3D Concrete Printer and Triaxial Earthquake and Shock Simulator (TESS).   About the 3D Concrete Printer: CERL together with Caterpillar, Inc., and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center have developed an additive, three dimensional (3D) printing technology capable of printing custom-designed expeditionary structures on-demand in the field using concrete sourced from locally available materials. The Automated Construction of Expeditionary Structures (ACES) technology provides the capability to print custom-designed expeditionary structures and materials with minimum personnel; providing structures that improve the safety, security, and quality of life for forward deployed troops and contractors.    About the TESS: The TESS is one of the premier engineering shake table facilities in the United States. The TESS can simulate a wide variety of controlled, realistic dynamic motion environments. Its ability to produce controlled six-degree-of-freedom motions of long duration makes it a logical choice for simulating both historical and hypothetical seismic conditions.   Tours last approximately one hour. Please bring a form of identification, preferably a Government issued ID. Confirmations of registration will be sent immediately, and requested tour times are confirmed unless contacted otherwise. CERL is operated as a Federal facility and no photography will be allowed inside the complex during the tours.   Please sign up for only ONE tour time. In addition, include yourself and any others with you in the number of tickets requested. All visitors must provide names of others in your party during registration.   CERL's Website: https://www.erdc.usace.army.mil/Locations/CERL/   FAQs:   Will my tour take place if the weather is bad?   All visitors will be contacted in advance if tours are cancelled due to weather. If it is raining but there is no lightning, tours will occur unless visitors choose to cancel.   How long will my tour last?   Approximately one hour.   What should I expect from my tour?   There will be four tour stops during the course of the walking tour. Tour guides and research personnel will give facility and technogy overviews and answer any questions.   Where should I park?   Tours will begin in the Shaffer Building, near the Visitor’s entrance. The street address for CERL is 2902 Newmark Drive, Champaign, IL 61822. The Visitor’s entrance is at the intersection of Interstate Drive and Newmark Drive (southwest side of the complex). Parking is available near the visitor's entrance. Simply park, go to the guard house, press the button on the speaker by the gate and tell them you are here for a lab tour. Visitors will then be allowed to enter. Once inside, tour guides will check in all visitors.   Can I bring friends and/or family?   You are more than welcome to bring friends and family. We ask that you carpool to the maximum extent possible as parking is limited. No pets are allowed except for service animals accompanying persons with a disability.   Do you have handicap accommodations available for those who may need them?   Yes! Accomodations can be made with prior notification. So please register for your tour.   Are there restrictions on what I can bring to the tour?   Yes. Please be aware that CERL is operated as a Federal facility.  All firearms, dangerous weapons, explosives, or other destructive devices are prohibited in our facility. As stated previously, no photography is allowed inside the complex during the tours.   If you have any questions, please contact us at (217) 373-6714 or email CERL50@usace.army.mil
