      Geology Hike of Three Peaks

Geology Hike of Three Peaks This seven-mile, geologist-led hike will scale trails around the granite-topped Three Peaks range west of Cedar City. Learn about the geologic events that formed granite domes and iron-rich ore bodies of the Iron Springs mining district. Also view enigmatic Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks that reveal evidence of violent earthquakes and mountain building in the distant past. Due to the length, elevation gain, and some off-trail scrambling, participants should be physically able. Be prepared with drinking water, snacks, trekking poles, proper hiking shoes, and comfortable clothing. This 1-day course meets from 8:00am - 12:00pm at the Three Peaks Recreation Area, transportation is not provided. Please be prepared with your own water, food, hiking gear and sunscreen. Registration deadline is August 1. Instructor Bio Tyler Knudsen earned his Master’s Degree in Geology from University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Since then, Knudsen has spent his career with the Utah Department of Natural Resources studying the geology and mapping southern Utah in the Cedar and Parowan valleys, Zion National Park, the St. George Basin and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. His “Investigation of Land Subsidence and Earth Fissures in Cedar Valley” won an award from the Geological Society of America in 2015.
