OLLI at UVM Reading Workshop: Migration Stories with Rebecca Starks

Immerse in the fundamental human story of migration-voluntary and involuntary-and the resulting experience of living between two cultures, using The Penguin Book of Migration Literature (2019) as a point of departure. Readings will go beyond our typical American perspective on immigration to explore global geographies of migration, as well as the perspectives of the indigenous and of those who were enslaved, trafficked, or otherwise forced to migrate. With an eye on the U.S.’s current immigration policy, we will look at how migration experience is shaped by race, gender, sexuality, class, physical ability, language, age, and legal status. Among many others, authors will include Edwige Danticat, Zadie Smith, Salman Rushdie, Julie Otsuka, and Marjane Satrapi.
