In support of its membership, the NBRPA proactively offers a full menu of education, health, finance and career/life transition benefits to retired basketball players and their families.   Working in conjunction with the NBA and NBPA, the NBRPA’s membership promotes basketball and enhances the sport’s image by building community relationships and fostering support for charitable activities and philanthropic events with a connection to the game.    By playing in the NBA, ABA, WNBA or with the Harlem Globetrotters, NBRPA members helped build the game of basketball and – through the distinction of an on-court professional career at the sport’s highest levels – remain ambassadors to the game for life.  NBRPA members embody the game long after taking the court professionally and put their notoriety to positive use as spokespersons and conduits of good will in the basketball community.   The Miami Chapter President is Irving Thomas. Thomas was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1990 NBA Draft. He continued his professional career with the International Basketball Federation and Continental Basketball Association for over seven years. Post-career, Thomas became a scout with the Lakers. Thomas played collegiate basketball with Florida State University and the University of Kentucky.   ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY National Retired Basketball Players Association, Miami Chapter OUR MISSION: The NBRPA Miami Chapter utilizes the fundamentals of sports to foster positive social interactions and personal development among targeted youth in underserved communities across South Florida. The NBRPA focuses on five core areas essential to the development of our youth and their participation in sports through: Fundamental Skill Work and Basketball Training; Role Model Mentoring; Academic and Career Counseling; Health, Fitness, and Wellness; and Competitive Play.   NBRPA Local & National Initiatives:      Legends Care is an initiative of the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) that positively impacts communities and youth through basketball. NBRPA Legends give back through clinics, mentoring, charitable outreach and other grassroots initiatives in the United States and abroad with the goal of educating, inspiring and keeping youth active, healthy and safe. Full Court Press Prep for Success is a youth basketball and mentoring clinic for underserved boys and girls, ages eight to 18, held in cities across the United States and abroad. The program is led by the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) with direct support from the NBA and housed under the Jr. NBA and NBA Cares brand. Full Court Press is designed to introduce participating youth to positive role models in both basketball and life, with equal time spent on the basketball court, in the classroom and at a mentoring roundtable as part of a robust and meaningful curriculum.   International Goodwill - as part of the National Basketball Retired Players Association’s (NBRPA) global mission to give back, a group of Legends and NBRPA staff embark on annual goodwill missions to international destinations, such as Haiti, Panama, South Africa, and China, using basketball as a vehicle to impact children.    Nicklaus Children’s Hospital To inspire hope and promote lifelong health by providing the best care to every child.  To be where the children are.
