Indie Lens Pop-Up Screening: "The First Rainbow Coalition"

In 1969, the Chicago Black Panther Party began to form alliances with other community-based movements in the city, including the Latinx Young Lords and the southern whites of the Young Patriots. In one of the most segregated cities in postwar America, these groups banded together to confront issues such as police brutality and substandard housing. But by 1973, the self-titled Rainbow Coalition had collapsed under relentless harassment by local and federal law enforcement. Although short-lived, the coalition broke down barriers between communities, created a permanent shift in Chicago politics and provided an organizing model for future activists and politicians across the nation. Following the screening, a panel discussion will feature Floyd Anthony (Amarillo NAACP Branch), Teresa Kenedy (Los Barrios de Amarillo) and more TBA.
