Selling your business? Find out why Merlin ERD and Woollard and Henry became employee owned

Scottish Enterprise and the Federation of Small Businesses will be hosting a ‘Selling your Business’ workshop exploring succession options including employee ownership on 13th November in Aberdeen. Have you considered a succession plan for your business? It’s never too early to start thinking about your options. Employee ownership is fast becoming the preferred exit route for business owners. Aimed at business owners considering an exit from their company, this session will give attendees the opportunity to hear engineering experts Merlin ERD and manufacturing firm Woollard and Henry explain what they considered in choosing employee ownership and how things have worked. “By becoming employee-owned, we’re anchoring highly- skilled jobs and a profitable high-tech business in Perth, Scotland.” Iain Hutchison, Merlin ERD “When the prospect of an employee buyout was first raised back in 2002, there were around 20 staff, all of whom saw a future for Woollard and Henry and the unique skills and expertise it could offer. We now employ 64 people and operate from five locations across the globe, going from almost zero international trade to exporting 60% of our output. We have also recently won our biggest contract to date, which will see our turnover increase to over £10million this year.” Fred Bowden, Woollard and Henry Alistair Gibb from Ownership Associates, will talk through all ownership succession options before focussing on employee ownership and how to ensure the employee buyout is a smooth process.
