Celebrating 100 years of: A Scout Is TRUSTWORTHY
The American Heritage Dictionary defines “trustworthy” as “warranting trust; reliable” and “trust” as “firm reliance on the integrity, ability or character of a person or thing”.
This is the first, and arguably, the most important of the twelve Scout Laws. Whether at work, at home, at church, at school, with your friends, with your family or just by yourself, trust and trustworthiness must prevail if you claim to be a Boy Scout.
Trust is the foundation upon which any relationship, business deal, or the effective operation of any entity is built and sustains itself. Trust and trustworthiness are mandatory for the society in which we live to remain civil.
As we kick off the 100th anniversary year of Scouting on February 8, 2009, the ideals of Scouting, the character building of Scouting, the Scout Laws, the Scout Oath, the Scout Motto and the Scout Slogan remain extremely relevant in our society.
In fact, they may well be needed now more than ever before to help rebuild the foundations of trust in segments of government and big business that have recently collapsed. They still mean that there is a strong likelihood that if someone says that they are now, or were a Boy Scout, that they are indeed worthy of your trust. And, if that Scout is an Eagle Scout, he has committed himself to being trustworthy for his entire life.
Fortunately, here on the Cape Cod and Islands, we are blessed to have some 2,400 trustworthy scouts and 800 leaders and volunteers and I am happy to report a recent increase in the number of youth involved in this proven program.
I am pleased to be part of this 100th anniversary celebration and hope that you and I will be able to celebrate many more trustworthy scouts for many years to come.
