      Pair Down and Buckle Up

“Pair Down and Buckle Up” is a group show which explores the female experience during recessions.

      Thursday, June 18, 2009

      Graffiti Gallery

      109 Higgins Ave.

Live music by DJ Mama Cutsworth

The reception runs from 8pm – 11pm, FREE entry with donation to RaY (Resource Assistance for Youth): Soaps, Shampoos, and feminine hygiene products are greatly needed! Food and refreshments will be served. The exhibit will be on display until August 13, 2009.

Work will be informed by historic instances wherein women, mothers, grandmothers, and wives, have been asked to lead the way into times of widespread economic or emotional distress. From seniors rationing food supplies to young brides recycling silk parachutes to create gowns, the concept of female selflessness during economic and emotional recession is a concrete yet romanticized component of the western concept of feminine.

The special tone of these requests, from partners, government, and businesses, has informed a creative desperation that generations of women have responded to uniquely.

Female artists will be asked to examine the concept of recession on their own terms. The artists will consider personal, family, and economic histories in creating works that discuss both sacrifice and innovation.

The 10 artists have with a variety of mediums - painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, drawing, fashion design, interior design, video, and sound – to ensure that that viewers have an encompassing and dynamic experience.

The show will also highlight the value of creative expression and artistic resilience in times of difficulty, placing the arts on a list of things we have not and will not do without.
