The Newman University Athletics Hall of Fame was created to honor student-athletes, coaches, administrators, advocates and patrons who have made significant contributions to the university's athletic programs.
Join us January 30 and 31, 2009 as we welcome and celebrate the 2009 Hall of Fame inductees:
Dr. Diana (Ford) Crook.
All-American in academics, graduate magna cum laude in 1985, was a two-year captain in volleyball. Continues to coach junior high and club volleyball, as well as running a family medical practice. Diana is a vibrant alumna who has stayed involved in both alumni and athletic functions.
The 1983 Baseball Team.
This team won the NAIA District-10 and the Area-3 championship to be the only Newman team to advance to the College World Series. The team was coached by Paul Sanagorski (Kazoo), with Sam Fluty as assistant coach. Team members to be inducted are: Dave Bauer (Schnepps/Schnauzer); Dave Beier (Stymie), Sam Biedron (Sammy); Rick Childers (Chili Dog); Chris Clawson (Clawdog); Ronnie Douglas (R.D.); James Forester (Faust/ Mood Ring); Carl Heinecker (Jed Clampitt); Scott Kailer (Hump); Mike Koester (Coast); Mike Maurer (Chariman Mau); Rick McNerlin (McNee/Weeble); Jeff Pluskis (Plee); Bret Reynolds (Burt/Renn); Steve Rorebeck (Rorz); Matt Sexton (Wango); Tim Steele (Seeds); Rod Stevenson (Mohad or Rodrigo) and Jeff Ubben (Ubes).
As we celebrate Newman University's 75th anniversary year, the weekend events will provide a special opportunity to look at the history of inter-collegiate athletics, which began at Newman in 1967 through 39 years with the National Association of Entercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and in its full acceptance this year into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II level.
Newman has distinguished itself as the only private university in the state of Kansas that is a member of the NCAA.
