BASIC BUDDHISM Time/Price: 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM. “By Donation” Location: Bodhi Tree Bookstore 8585 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood CA 90069 Description:Because of the great variety of Buddhist traditions currently practiced, there is some confusion as to the basic principles which Siddatha Gotama (563 BC – 480 BC) himself taught to the order of monks, nuns and laity. This talk presents basic Buddhist concepts derived directly from the canonical discourses (suttas) of the Buddha himself, as translated from the oldest extant Sinahalese manuscripts of the original Pali. We will review the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, annica (impermanence), annata (non-self), silas (moralities), samadhi (concentration), vipassana (insight), dhamma (doctrine) and nibbana (extinction). Etan Boritzer is a yoga teacher and has studied Eastern philosophy and practiced meditation and various spiritual disciplines since 1968 with teachers in India, China, Japan and the United States. He is the best selling children’s book author of What Is God? as well as 9 other books in the “What is?” series now translated and published in 12 languages, and also sold continuously at the Bodhi Tree Bookstore since 1989.
