I attended for my very first time a previously advertised lecture/book signing event at P and P on Sunday afternoon, April 22nd, at 5:00 Pm, When I arrived, there was standing room only and at least 100 other attendees. They surprisingly only had 30 books which the two authors agreed to sign after their remarks and " Q and A'" . The owner seemed visibly embarrassed and very kindly agreed to facilitiate my receiving the signed copies by both authors the following week; and I then paid for both the promised signed book as well as the CD of the entire event which was to be sent to my home address without shipping charges. I also left them my email and home address, and phone number and bought several other items. Several days later, I did indeed, promptly receive my CD without any shipping charges, as agreed. I just called, two weeks later and again spoke to Shane, who who took my name and phone number and agreed to call me right back. When he did, he stated that they had one copy signed by one of the two authors. I then also informed him that fortunately the " unsigned author " was in nearby Chevy Chase Maryland , so he agreed to talk to the owner about making arrangements to have him sign his book and would call me back.I chose not to accept the offer of only one of the author's signatures, wanting BOTH authors/participants from their April 22nd event. As a native Washingtonian, I had heard quite a few wonderful compliments about Politics and Prose in the past, and so far am chalking this up to a rare aberration awaiting their seemingly genuine desire to remedy the situation. Shane was exceedingly helpful and courteous, even though obviously placed in an awkward situation through no fault of his own.
Description
Our customers see us as a community center, a notion that we have fostered to the best of our ability. In this increasingly fragmented age people crave public places where they can relax with friends or in solitude. We have consciously attempted to provide this environment through our coffeehouse, and in the store with comfortable chairs for reading and relaxing (which we have provided since we opened fourteen years ago), and especially through our public events. We provide a mix of talks and readings to appeal to old and young, women and men, black and white—some for entertainment and others for raising issues.
