TasteDC Mastering Spirits: Cognac, Armagnac and Calvados 101

Master the Spirits of the World: Cognac, Armagnac and Calvados!

Taste 8 Grand French Spirits and Learn Their History!

Included - a Tasting of a 45 Year Old Cognac!

TasteDC is designing a series of classes to help you master the Spirits of the world. Each class
will have a professional outstanding in his/her field of Spirits expertise so that you taste and
learn and order for purchase (at your option) some of the rarest and finest examples of the
art of distillation! In this class, we will focus on probably the most misunderstood spirits
in the world: the historic brandies of France - Cognac, Armagnac and Calvados. In this class,
you will learn how to differentiate these types of spirits as well as find your personal preference
for different styles and ages. Our distinguished speaker and spirits specialist for this event
is Guillaume Lamy, Director of Education for Cognac Ferrand, one of the premiere importers of
high-end French brandies. Guillaume roots begin in the Loire Valley where he was trained in
wine making production and he has since continued his studies in the art of distillation from
the Cognac Ferrand distillery for the past 10 years. He is today responsible for the education
program of Cognac Ferrand in the United States and Canada which includes significant travel to
the Cognac region every year in order to develop blends and release new Cognac vintages with the
Cellar Master of the distillery. He conducts seminars on Cognac and other French regional spirits
as a guest lecturer at Boston University, MA and Fairleigh Duke University, NJ.
We will taste and cover in this class:

Cognac and French Brandy Master Class:
-Short History of French brandies, and the major distillers
-The major regional styles of Cognac, Armagnac, and Calvados
-The unique distillation process of various French regions including a discussion of "Eau de Vie",
French grapes, and Norman cider production
-how time and aging in various woods affect taste and quality - the "Angel's Share!"
-choosing a style to fit your personal tastes and any special occasion!
You will taste 8 French Brandies at this event.
Please note: no prior knowledge is required for this event.
Bread, crackers and cheese will be served with the French brandies as palate cleansers only.
