Salvadoran Mass and Mexican Lunch

Join us for the twelve noon Spanish Mass at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart. The Church is a big Byzantine style building - dark inside and now filled with much devotional art brought in by the largely Salvadoran community. The German and Irish heritage of the parish can still be seen in the Sacred Heart statue of Jesus inside the church. Originally founded in the late 19th century, the parish is now run by brown-robed-and-bearded Capuchin Franscican fathers and has a strong tradition of social justice ministry. The noon Mass in Spanish is very lively with great music. Dress code is neat but not formal. After Mass, we will head over to Taqueria Distrito Federal, Ercilia's or Haydee's - all authentical local restaurants with great reviews from the local press. Filling meals for about $10. At Taqueria Distrito Federal, the tacos, burritos and quesadillas are modestly prices (around $7) and are fresh, delicious and filling. The restaurant makes its own traditional sweet drinks, "aguas frescas", including horchata, an almond based drink - the drinks are stored in huge glass jars and then ladeled out by the staff. Mount Pleasant is changing, and has now become partly gentrified. The parish is convenient to both the 16th Street s series Metro busses (although these can run slow as the day moves on). The Columbia Heights Green Line Metro Stop is about two blocks from the parish.
