Peruvian Festival in Arlington, VA - Cuisine, Cultural Performance & More!!

The Peruvian Festival of Arlington, held annually in honor of Peru's independence day (July 28), celebrates the South American country's 188 years of independence from Spain with a traditional lineup of Peruvian dances, music and cuisine. Hear singers perform msica criolla (Creole) and Afro-Peruvian songs, while huayno musicians and dancers perform that genre, which has its origins in the Andean highlands. On the menu are more than 15 Peruvian dishes, from standard fare such as Peruvian chicken a la brasa and seafood ceviche to more exotic dishes such as anticuchos (marinated, grilled skewers of beef heart) and rocoto relleno (Peruvian peppers stuffed with cheese and meat). The truly adventurous culinary explorer can try cau cau or chanfainita, two dishes made from stewed beef stomach. Cerca de 8 mil personas llegan anualmente a este festival, desde los estados de Virginia, Maryland, DC, e incluso de estados cercanos donde no existen festivales peruanos. La atracciones más importantes de este tradicional evento son: el carácter familiar y comunitario que tiene, la cantidad de puestos de comida peruana de los mejores restaurantes del área de DC. “Algunos llegan desde las 10 de la mañana para comer el ceviche fresquito” dice Isolina Campos quien dirige el grupo organizador del evento, y el programa de música y danzas peruanas en vivo. En el escenario se presentarán el grupo de cumbia peruana Los Pasteles Verdes, la cantante andina Saywa ‘Victoria de Ayacucho’, las cantantes de música criolla Nedda Huambachano y su hija Milagros Huambachano, el grupo de rock Mama Cesta, y los artistas de música peruana Sonia Valer, Julio Carhuajulca, Walter Avalos, Víctor Padilla, así como Víctor y Mónica Hurtado entre otros. Participarán tambien las escuelas de danzas peruanas Ritmos de Perú, Mamauca y Matices. Habrán puestos de artes y ropa peruanas, y empresas que promocionan servicios a la comunidad de peruanos en Estados Unidos.
