Bryer, a professor emeritus of English, and Robin Wilder, a niece by marriage of Thornton Wilder, have edited some 300 letters written by “the man who knew everybody.” Wilder, best known for his plays, including Our Town, wrote novels, mentored younger writers, and hobnobbed with literati.
