Event details: HIROSHI SUGIMOTO: Drive-In Theaters & Portraits
Description
November 8 - December 20, 2008
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 8, 2008, 6:30 8:30 PM
Washington, D.C. Hemphill Fine Arts presents a selection of photographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto in Gallery Three. The exhibition includes photographs from the Drive-In Theater series and Portrait series. The exhibition opens on Saturday, November 8, with a public reception from 6:30 8:30pm, and will remain on view through December 20, 2008.
For the last 30 years, world-renowned artist Hiroshi Sugimoto has made photographs that blur the boundaries of reality. The portraits, taken in Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, imbue the wax figures with an eerie sense of life and recall the paintings of Hans Holbein and Anthony van Dyck. The evocative and otherworldly nature of the drive-in movie theater screens' glowing white light, seen only because of his long-exposure technique, embody the intangible quality for which Sugimoto's work is known.
As a complement to the Drive-In Theater photographs of Sugimoto, Hemphill presents Kendall Messick's The Projectionist simultaneously in Galleries One and Two. The Projectionist depicts the life of an eccentric outsider who created a remarkable body of work including a fully functional, faux-vintage, 9-seat movie theater. Messick's photographs document this remarkable and touching story. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with FotoWeekDC (www.fotoweekdc.org), November 15 - 22, 2008.
