Description
Join us for our first event of 2009, a community celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King's life and legacy in his 80th birthday year. BSO Music Director Marin Alsop leads the BSO and the Soulful Symphony in Joseph Schwantner's moving work New Morning for the World, showcasing texts by Dr. King set to music, with Kwesi Mfumé, former president of the NAACP, as narrator. This special performance also includes music of Tchaikovsky and Brahms, marching bands, choral groups, and more. PROGRAM Tchaikovsky: Hamlet Overture Joseph Schwantner: New Morning for the World (1982) Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in c minor, Op. 68 Marin Alsop, conductor Kweisi Mfumé, narrator Soulful Symphony Baltimore Symphony Orchestra TICKETS I will buy group tickets for this concert as I receive payments from folks. Please send $26 by PayPal to mpfeiffenberger@worldbank.org if you would like to be included in the group purchase. The final deadline for sending payment to be a part of the group purchase is Tuesday, January 6 at 6:30 pm. ONLINE INFORMATION Directions to Strathmore by Metro and car Website for the concert More information on New Morning for the World DINNER BEFORE THE CONCERT For those of you interested in meeting before the concert for dinner, I will be at the Strathmore box office at 6 pm. At 6:15 pm, I will go with those who have arrived through the cafeteria line and take the elevator up to floor 4B to reserve a table for us. If you arrive after 6:15 and I have purchased your ticket, please look for it under your name at the box office "will call" window. Once you have it, you are welcome to purchase dinner and join us on floor 4B. We will aim to have a table just outside the elevator exit - look for the Meetup sign on the table. Please indicate in your RSVP if you plan on joining the group for dinner, as this helps us to know how many seats to save. WHERE TO MEET Before the concert, look for us up on level 4B. That's where we will be eating dinner, and most of us will probably hang out there until shortly before the concert begins. During the intermission and after the concert, we will gather downstairs on the lowest level across from the entrance to the theater. Some of us will hang out there after the concert to chat and to wait for the parking garage to clear out. Please join us if you're not in a hurry to leave. This looks like a good concert to start off an eventful year. And I can assure you that the Schwantner piece is a powerful and moving work. Hope to see you there! Mather
