Description
Freer Gallery Meyer Auditorium

(988, 89 min., Japanese with English subtitles, directed by Isao Takahata, Japan) Taking place in Japan toward the end of World War II, it is the poignant tale of two orphaned children who try to survive amid widespread famine and the callous indifference of their countrymen. Some critics consider it one of the most powerful antiwar movies ever made. Panel discussion follows screening with speakers John W. Dower (Ford International professor of history, MIT), Susan J. Napier (professor of Japanese studies, Tufts University), and Frederik L. Schodt (author of many works on Japanese history, popular culture, and technology).
