Happy New Years at the MT. Beacon Fire Tower at Postal code 12590, US

**A Hudson Valley Hiker Classic ** MOUNT BEACON New Years 'Mimosa' special Meetup Times and Location: 9:00am- Beacon Gateway Park (Parking area and trailhead are located at the intersection of Route 9D and Howland Avenue in the City of Beacon. ) Trail info- We will be taking the steps from the Gateway park to the Red trail. The trail is 6 or 7 switchbacks up to the old casino with a very rewarding look out point where you can see the Hudson Valley. > We will hike to the Firetower on the South peak We will hike to the Beacon reservoir and hike the Cabin trail back to the Gateway. Distance: 5 - 6 miles Trip time: 4 - 5 hour hike The First 0.8 miles of this hike is hard, and very steep with 1000ft. elevation gain. Mount Beacon is the second highest point in the Hudson Highlands. Depending on the map, it may be called Mount Beacon or Beacon Mountain. The mountain consists of two peaks. The northern peak is 1531ft and has a series of radio antennas on its summit. The higher southern peak is 1610ft and has a lookout tower on its summit. On a clear day one can see the New York City skyline from the summit as well as views of the town of Beacon and the majority of the Highlands (including Storm King, Breakneck Ridge, and little Sugarloaf). NOTE: You are responsible for bringing appropriate gear, supplies, clothing, first aid and lights. You should review topographic maps and trail features carefully; understanding topography of any challenge hike is key to your knowing where you are, where you're going and how to get back. > Water and food, micro-spikes and/or snow shoes and possible snowpants ... might be nice to have along :) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Join these hikes only at your own risk.
