In an effort to establish their careers as professional artists, four of the first female American sculptors went to Rome. WSRC scholar, Terry Byrne, will tell the story of Edmonia Lewis, Harriet Hosmer, Emma Stebbins and Anne Whitney as they crossed paths, competing, collaborating, studying and strategizing, in an artistic community that embraced poets, novelists, and painters alike.
