Description The Award Wining dance musical comedy "Almond Eyes - a love story from the Chop Suey Circuit" is a high energy, uplifting dance musical comedy in the Broadway tradition featuring Asian performers. It is a love story that happened in San Francisco Chinatown during the 1940's. The “Chop Suey Circuit” was a fun and lively environment of Asian night clubs that flourished before, during, and after the time of World War II with Asian performers and a mixed White and Asian patronage. Much like the cotton clubs of Harlem. The “Chop Suey Circuit” primarily existed in San Francisco Chinatown. It was difficult being an Asian-American solider in Europe during WWII, it was difficult for returning veterans and it was difficult for those left waiting. It takes us into several Asian American worlds; backstage, on stage, personal, political, and social with love, humor, and great original “40’s” music and dance all against the undercurrents of World War II and its aftermath. The musical won the CALSTATELA CY LEE creative writing prize. CY LEE is the author of FLOWER DRUM SONG and has been very encouraging. He believes this uplifting production will bring the Asian experience to the public, will preserve and publicize Asian history, and will support Asians in the arts. History is made by those who write it and Asian American history has largely been ignored because it has been told by others. ALMOND EYES is an entertaining education about Chinatown San Francisco history as well as Asian-American History from an Asian-American perspective. The production will validate the lives of people involved with the Chop Suey Circuit, Asian American Veterans of WWII, the Americans of Japanese ancestry who were interned, and all Americans who should remember what the men we sent to fight for us are fighting for. ** Note: More to come on the Asian restaurant.
