The 34th Annual International Eelpout Festival
Where A Slimy Fish and Stupid-Cold Temps Make Even the Timid Do Crazy Things!

      Walker, MN
      February 14-17, 2013

Walker, MN (January 14, 2013) –The International Eelpout Festival, a tradition steeped in angling through lake ice for one of the ugliest bottom-dwelling fish, is often viewed as a slice of pure, unadulterated cold-weather Americana and even, for some, a bucket-list worthy adventure!

Entering its 34th year, the Annual International Eelpout Festival attracts roughly 10,000 participants and visitors to Walker, Minn. (pop. 1,500) for three days every February. Always a spectacle, the Festival has increasingly drawn national interest and attention. In 2011, The Tonight Show w/Jay Leno opted to spend an entire weekend in Walker to check out “the infamous pout”. The Festival in turn provided so much revelry that the crew ended up producing a 2-part series about the long-held traditions of this truly ugly (but humbly charming) creature.

The Eelpout Festival has been a favorite of professional and weekend documentary filmmakers for years.

Join us in Walker, and in addition to providing broadcast-ready HD b-roll, we can show you many ways to immerse yourself in this beloved rite of passage that is The International Eelpout Festival:

 Pucker up to smooch a slimy, stinky fish face for luck – A long-held event tradition.
 Tour the pout city of ice fishing encampments to see what hearty Minnesotans can build with a hammer and plywood! The 24-hour transformation from empty lake to bustling ice village is a must see!
 Pout 500 Ice Auto races, the Eelpout Derby and Pout Olympic curling bring out the ice cold competitor in everyone.
 Dress up (or down) to jump into a freezing Minnesota lake in February!
 Sip an ice cold drink on a 40,000 pound ice cold bar (literally) built on the lake!
 Compete on the mechanical ice bull, take in some midget ice-wrestling … and even stick around for the infamous “Frozen” wet T-shirt contest.
 Emerge yourself in a culture simply too unique to explain to those who “haven’t been”.
 Watch a Minnesota town swell to 10x its size in celebration of a nasty-looking fish.

The Festival also serves as a perfect backdrop to the annual Chase the Pout Games, hosted by Chase on the Lake, northern Minnesota’s premier historic resort property. The annual Chase the Pout activities provide additional revelry and events in collaboration with the time-honored Festival. The historic lakeside hotel, often referred to as “The Chase”, is a central meeting place for scheduled events and activities which, along with eelpout ice angling, include a 40,000 pound “UV Ice Bar” and new V.I.P. lounge, live music, mechanical bull riding contest, the infamously (and insanely) colorful Walker Polar Pout Plunge and so much more!

“We’re quite proud our tiny town of 1,500 people draws national attention,” comments Jamie Tatge, manager of The Chase. “Considering the colorful tradition and consequent insanity that has been going on here for the past three decades, I wouldn’t be surprised if this continues to attract national attention … and of course we always welcome more pout enthusiasts!”
