Description
The walk trail, rated as 1+, will be primarily along the Virginia Capital and Greensprings Greenway Trail. These trails are partially natural surface and asphalt pavement with some small hills. The Greensprings Greenway Trail has a nature trail, with information signs about the history of the area. The Greensprings Greenway Trail is a 3-mile soft surface trail that loops through a landscape of beaver ponds, wetlands and forests, and over 600 feet of boardwalk. The trail includes interpretative signs about the environment, historical events of the early colonists and American Indians and area wildlife. The trail is on wetlands adjacent to Mainland Farm, the oldest continuously cultivated farm in America. Over 200 species of birds have been documented on this site and it is part of the Virginia Birding Trail. We will be using a portion of the Virginia Capital Trail (an asphalt trail that goes from Jamestown Festival Park to across the Chickahominy River). The Virginia Capital Trail is a pedestrian and bicycle trail that connects the Commonwealth’s past and present capitals of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Richmond along the Scenic Route 5 corridor. The Capital Trail will eventually traverse 50+ miles, five jurisdictions and 400 years rich in history along one of the first inland routes in North America. It will eventually go all the way to Richmond. The trail must be walked during daylight hours.
