Update 12/7/09: Dogs will not be allowed to attend this trip! Jones Mountain Cabin is a two story log structure first rebuilt in 1918 by moonshiner Harvey Nichols who resurrected the cabin on the remains of the burned out homestead built by his father around 1855. The Chestnut timbers and stone foundation and fireplace erected by the NicholsÃÂ' are still in place today. Located a few miles north of Graves Mill Virginia and within the boundaries of the Shenandoah National Park the cabin has been well maintained by the PATC since 1974. The Plan: We will leave the Virginia Beach carpool location at 8 am and pickup the Newport News carpool people at about 8:30 am. We will then drive the rest of the way to the trailhead. We should be there by 11ish at the latest. We will then hike the 3.8 mile uphill hike to the cabin where we will be spending the weekend. The cabin is provided with a propane cook stove, a pot-bellied stove and open fireplace. Water can be found at a small spring located only 75 ft from the cabin. An outdoor privy is also located nearby. Kitchen utensils, plates and cups are provided as well as mattresses, blankets (not enough for cold weather), a bow saw and splitting maul. Items such as condiments, trash bags, soap, paper products or other expendables are not provided. You will be responsible for bringing your own food and equipment. The only things provided for you are the few items listed above. There is a spring and outhouse not far from the cabin. We will drive back on Sunday. We will spend the weekend exploring different trails in the area, or just enjoying the company of our fellow hikers in the cabin. IMPORTANT: This event is limited to the first 10 people who sign up. In order to sign up you MUST pay the $8 fee that goes toward the cabin rental. This is non-refundable. If you back out, you've just donated to the other people going on this trip.
