Enjoy Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" at the one of the most famous churches in Vienna - the St. Charles Church (Karlskirche).
The St. Charles Church was completed in 1737. Three years later Antonio Vivaldi had moved to Vienna. Being a priest, he surely admired this brand new extraordinary sacred builing. The church's architecture, which is highly appreciated today, must have seemed very impressive and unusual to people of the 18th century.
Vivaldi himself died in Vienna on July 28th 1741. He was burried just a few meters from St. Charles Church at “Spitaler God´s Acre“. Today, the Technical University is located here, and only a small sign on the building remains as a reminder of Vivaldi. The grave and the bones are lost.
Only a few years before Vivaldi moved to Vienna, he composed his most famous “The Four Seasons“, a compilation of four revolutionary concertos for solo violin and string orchestra. Four poems (perhaps written by Vivaldi) provide the basis of the composition, which musically illustrates furious thunder storms and lightening flashes, breaking ice and the twittering of birds, sleeping shepherds, barking dogs, a band of hunters....
