Description

The "Mozart Ensemble Wien" performs in the house of  W. A. Mozart (Wiener Mozarthaus) reviving performance traditions of the Viennese Classical period. Their repertoire includes well known string quartets and chamber music of the Viennese School.  Although the primary focus is on the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, compositions by Franz Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert are to be heard as well.

The concerts at the Mozart House take place at the monastery of the "German Teotonic Order", where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived and worked for Archbishop Colloredo in the year 1781. Although one hears, while visiting Vienna,  that Mozart "lived" in this house, he actually only officially resided there for six weeks in the year 1781 from March 16th. until May 2nd. Nevertheless, he wrote his opera "The Marriage of Figaro" here and Mozart appreciated the wonderful acoustics and the incomparable atmosphere of the "Sala Terrena". The hall "Sala Terrena" is the oldest concert hall in Vienna, where Mozart himself performed many concerts.

The monastery is decorated with beautiful frescoes in the style of the late Venetian Renaissance and is therefore an ideal setting for performances of Viennese classical chamber music of the 18th century. The Sala Terrena, with its beautiful vaulted ceiling, is situated on the ground floor next to the church and the sacristy. Just as the church is a fine example of Gothic revival, the Sala Terrena is a baroque jewel that was beautifully restored in its recent renovation.

The "Mozart Ensemble Wien" consists of four well known musicians of the Vienna Chamber Music scene, who also perform as soloists. Tours and concerts have brought them to all the countries of Europe as well as to Japan and South America, where they have played their quartet repertoire. By performing in Austria and abroad, the "Mozart Ensemble Wien" has established itself in Viennese concert life and has become an "insider tip" for visitors from all over the world.

There is not much space in the little hall and the event is aimed  mainly at visitors to Vienna  - but having attended a concert at Mozart's house is something that you will remember for a long, long time!

More about Mozarthaus
Mozarthaus
The Sala Terrena from the 18th century, is the oldest concert hall in Vienna and it was here Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart used to work and play for Bishop Colloredo in 1781.The Sala Terrena with its beautiful vault, is situated on the ground floor next to the church and the sacristy. It was designed and painted in the second half of the eighteenth century in late Renaissance Venetian style in the reign of the Land Commander Carl Borromäus Count Colloredo Waldsee (Land Commander from 1764 %u2013 1786).The grotesque scenes, the scenes of baroque sensuality, the floral paintings and the animal scenes give evidence of the purpose of this hall, as a place of pleasure for body and soul. The famous Viennese popular figure %u201Cder liebe Augustin%u201D is also depicted here. In the course of the renovation of this hall, it became evident that this is the oldest part of the building. Fragments of gothic frescos were found and this seems to confirm the tradition that even before the Holy Cross had existed there. Today the Sala Terrena is used for musical performances, by the Teutonic Order and for other purposes of representation. Just as the church is a fine example of gothic revival, so the Sala Terrena is a baroque jewel that was beautifully restored in the course of its' renovation in recent years.Last update 2007 Editorial Team Classictic.com
