Picturing Native: Photographs from Edward Curtis, Horace Poolaw and Zig Jackson

Please Join us at the John A. Day Gallery for the closing reception of Picturing Native: Photographs from Edward Curtis, Horace Poolaw and Zig Jackson on Friday, January 25, 5 - 7:30 p.m.

Picturing Native features the relationship between the photographic medium and the portrayal of American Indian subjects in the past 100 years. The exhibition will feature photogravures by Edward Curtis. These photogravures, created in the early 20th century, are housed in the University Libraries Special collections at USD. In addition to Curtis's photogravures, the exhibition will feature work by Kiowa photographer,
Horace Poolaw, and the contemporary photography of
Zig Jackson. Picturing Native is a critical investigation of the myths and perpetual romanticizing of Native American subjects throughout the history of the photographic medium in the United States. Rather than display three distinct approaches to the American Indian subject, the three bodies of work engage each other, offering contrasting ideas about an authentic representation of the American Indian.
