As one of the most popular and acclaimed arenas in the NCAA, The Pit has become a welcoming home to the talented New Mexico Lobos men's and women's basketball teams. While the Lobos and Lady Lobos are known for their winning seasons, The Pit has excellent attendance records that include some loud and enthusiastic fans. This sunken, basketball-only arena has become a beloved second home, not only for the players, but for students of the University of New Mexico and lovers of Lobos basketball.
The Pit (originally known as University Arena) was built in 1966 as a replacement for Johnson Gymnasium following the hiring of legendary coach Bob King, whom the court is now named for. Whereas most basketball arenas are built from the ground up, The Pit was built in a 37 foot hole in the ground and the exposed part of the arena is just one regular sized story. Since the arena is located in the ground (hence the name), there are no pillars or columns to obstruct the audience's view. However, this arrangement has also made it the loudest arena in the nation; great for enthusiastic fans, bad for visiting teams.
