Description
JOHN SWANA trumpet & BOOTSIE BARNES tenor saxophone with THE CHRIS GESTRIN TRIO featuring CHRIS GESTRIN b3 organ, DAVE SIKULA drums and MORGAN CHILDS drums.

John Swana is one of the most exciting trumpeters to arrive for a decade, declares Mark Gardner,
co-author of Blackwells Guide to Recorded Jazz.
Swana has performed in the Philadelphia and New York areas with well known jazz names such as
Don Patterson, Shirley Scott, Mickey Roker, Cecil Payne, Johnny Coles, Ralph Peterson, Charles
Fambrough, Bobby Watson, Trudy Pitts, Bootsie Barns, Craig Handy, Chris Potter, Stephen Scott,
Tim Warfield, Eric Alexander, Sam Newsome,Vincent Herring, Uri Caine, Peter Leitch Ralph Bowen,
and Robin Eubanks. He has also been heard with Freddie Hubbard, Phil Woods, Ronnie Cuber, Eddie
Lockjaw Davis, Clark Terry, Frank Foster, John Faddis, Slide Hampton, J.J. Johnson, Bob Minzer,
and Charlie Persip as a member of the Joe Sudler Swing Machine, a 16-piece big band based in
Philadelphia.

Bootsie Barnes has toured, performed and recorded with literally all the great organists including Shirley Scott, Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, Charles Earland, Trudy Pitts, Poppa John and Joey DeFrancesco and others too numerous to name. In the late 1980s, Bootsie toured with his childhood friend and classmate, Bill Cosby, and made guest appearances on The Bill Cosby Show, (playing himself) as well as many other television appearances. As recently as 2001 he toured with Cosby, playing the Playboy Jazz Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival. Today, Bootsie Barnes is known as the man with the â&128;&152;Tenor Touch because of his dynamic style on the tenor saxophone. His smooth and distinct sound is easily recognizable whether softly caressing a ballad, or swinging hard, during live performances or on CD. JazzTimes magazine sums up his solos thusly: â&128;¦plays tenor saxophone with self-assured flair and gorgeous depthâ&128;¦ and â&128;¦plays in a classic style reminiscent of Gene Ammons and Hank Mobleyâ&128;¦. Bootsie can be heard as a sideman on many, many recordings, and has released one vinyl album and three CDs as a leader; Been Here All Along, You Leave Me Breathless Hello and Boppin Round the Center
