Festival of Lights at Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City

Dec 5-6, come celebrate the Festival of Lights at our Washington Park Zoo. Holiday carolers, luminaries, meet Santa Clause, and enjoy some hot cocoa. Time 5-7pm both days. Stroll the beautiful stone walkways and islands to see more than 90 animal exhibits within walking distance of the shores of Lake Michigan. Offering facilities for reunions and birthday parties. Reciprocal agreement with more than 90 other zoos through membership. History Washington Park Zoo began in 1925 when a retired animal trainer moved his brown bear named "Jake" to the Washington Park lake front. Jake did not have much public exposure after his trainer retired, so the man thought interested people might more often visit his pet in the park and provide company for him. The public response was immediate and a few other animals and birds were brought in from the fire department to add to their menagerie. Back then, the fire department often sheltered discarded exotic animals. Artifacts Collections The zoo has about 100 different species exhibited in the zoo. The zoo displays a lot of WPA workmanship in the walkways and buildings. Three of the most renowned are the Rotary Castle,Observation tower and the Island.
