Every ten or so years an artist or band comes along that is so unique, so fresh and so original sounding that it starts a whole new trend for rest of the music industry to follow. International Acoustic Group of the year, Herrick is one such band.
With intricate harmonies and a distinctive sound that combines the best of country, rock and blues, Herrick shatters the current country music mold and creates a new path for it to follow. Full of heartfelt lyrics, their music is dynamic and appealing, yet it is unconstrained by "formulas" for hit songs. It's real, it's earthy and it doesn't pull any punches when it hits you right in the gut.
Herrick is formed by lead singer/mandolin player Donna and brothers Kerry (bass) and Kevin (guitar) Herrick. The Herrick brothers began as a duo, singing gospel music around their hometown of Spokane, WA. A few years later, Donna joined the group and they began to write their own music. Their never-ending energy and strong work ethic quickly led Herrick to playing rodeos, festivals and clubs all over the Northwest and opening up for acts like Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Hank Thompson, Sam Bush and Ray Price.
"We found our music didn't appeal to just one kind of crowd like the cowboys or the jocks, and that's because we write songs that are real and a reflection of how we are feeling musically at that time," says Kerry. His brother Kevin adds, "We don't write to a template or try and calculate how a tune might sell in some market. It just comes out of us naturally as we pull a song together. It*s very organic."
"Of course it's great when someone comes up and tells you how much one of your songs touched them," comments Donna. "But we write music for us first, because we love it. It's the only way we know how to make music. And we've found over the years that what we are feeling or going through is often what's happening to our fans too so it speaks to them as well."
Playing upwards of 200 dates a year, more than 2,500 shows in their career and selling more than 20,000 CDs independently , Nashville industry insiders label the band
"A Breath of Fresh Air". Different is very intriguing, and Herrick has been winning fans and music insiders over with every gig they play. They are now one of the most requested bands in the Nashville area. With diverse influences like Ryan Adams, Ricky Skaggs, Boston, Merle Haggard, The Eagles, Emmylou Harris, Rush, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and more it's no wonder their music combines many elements from different musical styles into a new and unique blend.
As important as the songs are, the band is equally serious about its ability to perform live, Comments from the crowd compare Herrick with Nickel Creek on crack, as the standard for musicianship. "Everyone in our band is able to burn his instrument down to the ground," notes Kevin, matter-of-factly. "We are blessed with the people we play with.
They are just top notch."
Their innate instinct for creating high quality music has helped Herrick stand out from the crowd as they tour to Standing Room Only crowds across the country.
Herrick is taking their music to a wider audience and stand beside their idols making their own distinct mark in the annals of music.
And Herrick is confident that you will want to listen to every song along the way.
Hurrah, it's Friday!
