Traditional/world/folk/jazz fusion outfit, the incomparable ABAKUYA is also the voice of a sacred and endangered music. Inspired by Cameroonian oral tradition and created by renowned musician and Bulu storyteller FRANCOIS ESSINDI, in collaboration with consummate Australian musician and composer JIMI SOFO, ABAKUYA’s music is the result of a search for the healing elements of polyphonic traditional music from central Africa, specifically the Ekang and le Bal (pronounced Bol) with their fascinating rythms

Interests

Abakuya's compositions, both the original music and interpretations of some traditional songs, combine elements from Cameroonian, Australian and world folklore. By presenting traditional music in a contemporary format the band makes it more accessible to people from all around the world. The sound is further enhanced by the use of standard and non-standard instrumentation, such as acoustic, bass, violin, vocal, drums, percussion, mvet, ngômo, and others… Les compositions d’Abakuya vont du conte traditionnel, des musiques traditionnelles et des interprétations de la berceuse combinée dans un folklore. Cette fusion parfois mi transe mi rock amène l’auditeur dans un voyage à travers le monde. Ce son si enchantant est issu d’une fusion d’instruments traditionnels, modernes, et improvisés ou acoustiques ; la basse, le violon, la voix, parfois une batterie, des percussions, le mvet, le ngomo, et d’autres encore… .
