Event details: Centuries of Progress: American World&39;s Fairs, 1853-1982
Description
From the time of the first Worlds Fair in London in 1851 until the 1982 fair in Knoxville, Tennessee, international expositions celebrated progress, trade, and goodwill. These fairs were the marketplaces of ideas and technological innovation. Many familiar consumer goods that are now part of the fabric of American life from Wonder Bread to Juicy Fruit gum were either introduced or popularized at worlds fairs. Fair-goers also experienced art, architecture, design, music, popular culture, and entertainment. The fairs shaped both our American experience and our world view while promising a better standard of living for all.
