Emerging Trends in Acute Care for Athletic Trainers

OBJECTIVES:

• Gain skills to properly treat and assesses related illness
• Demonstrate how to take a rectal temperature accurately and efficiently
• Identify the indications and contraindications for the use of ice immersion in the treatment of heat related illnesses
• Discuss the different types of breathing devices used to establish and maintain an airway and adequately ventilate an individual
• Demonstrate and apply the skills needed to establish and maintain an airway
• Demonstrate how to prepare and administer supplemental oxygen and gain Spo2 certification
• Identify how to incorporate acute care compentencies while adhering to the Connecticut State Practice Act.

7:45 – 9:15: Concurrent Labs

                    Management of Heat Illnesses: The Korey Stringer Institute, University of Connecticut

                    Airway Management & Supplemental Oxygen:John Cotter & Eleni Diakogeorgiou,                                Sacred Heart University

          9:30 – 11:00: Concurrent Labs

                      Participants will switch labs at this time
