Description
On November 3, a Sung Requiem Mass with Gregorian Chant according to the 1962 Roman Missal will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 291 Cosburn Avenue Toronto. This is the Mass as celebrated prior to the reforms of 1970 and has been called by Pope Benedict XVI in his Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum, the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. This liturgy which was codified at the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century is the Mass as celebrated in Rome from the days of the catacombs and the early Church. Who is your favourite Saint? Padre Pio? Francis of Assisi? Thomas Aquinas? Gregory the Great? Thomas More? Maria Goretti? This is the Mass they celebrated or assisted at. Freed from the false notion that it was abrogated by Pope Benedict XVI, Archbishop Thomas Collins recently invited the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP) to establish an apostolate in Toronto which will soon grow to a full parish, though at a yet to be announced church location. Currently, the Chaplain, Father Howard Venette, FSSP, celebrated the usus antiquior Monday to Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church and on Sunday at 1:00 at St. Theresa Shrine Catholic Church on Kingston Road. The Sunday Mass is celebrated as a "Low Mass" but soon after this November 3 liturgy, the Mass on Sunday will be a Missa Cantata with the formation of a Schola and Choir which I invite any of you to contact me about. If you have never experienced the Roman Liturgy as it was celebrated since the early Church then what better time than to join the Church Militant praying for the Church Suffering in Purgatory. A few notes for the Mass, the priest will face "ad orientem" that is "to the east" from whence Christ will come as he lead us on the pilgrimage to God. There is no hand shaking, Communion is received kneeling and only on the tongue. Later, I will post some other resources to assist you at the Mass. I will be in the loft with a couple of fine gentlemen as we provide the full Gregorian Chant for the Requiem including the Dies Irae.
