For everyone that can't get enough Carrier (and who can), Dr. Carrier will be speaking to the KC Freethinkers the night after our debate covering 3 topics: 1. Miracles and the Historical Method Ancient Pagan and Christian miracles were equally silly. But how do historians know not to believe them? Check out this quick survey of historical methods and wild examples from ancient times, and walk away with a complete toolkit for critically examining historical claims of any kind. 2. Debating the Jesus Myth Did Jesus even exist? Should we press the point? If Jesus didn't exist, were the Apollo moon landings faked and the Egyptian pyramids built by aliens? Learn how to tell the difference between crackpot notions of Jesus' nonexistence, and plausible hypotheses of his gradual invention. 3. Why Everyone Says Medieval Christians Invented Science The new fashion of late is to claim the ancient pagans were ignorant, unscientific lunkheads that only the Christian religion could save us from. As this new story goes, medieval Christians invented science, and if it weren't for Christianity, we'd still be talking to rocks, and assuming they fall to the ground because they're in love with it. Learn why this is not just nonsense on stilts, but nonsense on twirling rockets to the moon. If you're interested in carpooling feel free to mention it when RSVPing. Space may be limited. I will contact Iggy to get us some seats saved.
