REVIEW: “...SkyPilot Theatre Company deserves praise for staging this brutally relevant show about truth and justice...the perfect background for what playwright Ariel Dorfman is really writing about ...the beautiful and touching Enci...Eric Curtis Johnson in a wonderfully honest performance... Benton Jennings bravely and capably taking on one of the ugliest characters in modern theater history... this is a very talented cast...a cut above the majority of local low-budget productions...” - Mary Burkin, The Burbank Leader

REVIEW: Death and the Maiden at the Sidewalk Studio Theatre By Beth Temkin on November 05,2008 Death and The Maiden, written by Ariel Dorfman, with skillful direction by Dado, is a superb production. Set in a beach house with an open door, curtain blowing (set design by Danuta Tomzynski), and waves crashing, the action ensues. First-rate sound effects by Bob Rokos include off-stage vehicles arriving and departing. In a country new to democracy, Gerard, the lawyer husband, (Eric Curtis Johnson) has just accepted an offer by the new president to head an investigative commission of criminal offenses under the old regime. A neighbor, Dr. Miranda, (Benton Jennings) has helped Girard by loaning him a jack for his flat tire, and when he later knocks on the door to congratulate Gerard on his appointment, being dead tired, he's asked to spend the night. In the dark, a body is dragged from the bedroom into the front room, tied and gagged by Paulina. 15 years ago, Gerar's wife Paulina (Enci) had been tortured and raped, and crazed with pent-up rage, is convinced that Miranda was the doctor in charge of her torture. She identifies his smell, his voice, and finds in his car a CD of Schubert's Death and the Maiden, music played as she was being tortured. Choking and miserable, protesting he has nothing to confess, Paulina continues to threaten him at gun point. Late in the second act, in a chilling spotlighted monologue Miranda tells that although he began with humanitarian motives, he soon began to enjoy his work to see how much pain someone could endure. "

AUDIENCE SAYS (on Goldstar) -Death and the Maiden at the Sidewalk Studio Theater was an intense, tightly-woven production with solid performances by all three cast members. The entire play occurs in one room, but the story is gripping and builds so relentlessly that my hands were literally balled-up into fists for the last third of the play. Good production value and a small theatre also really helped to immerse me in the experience. In the role of Paulina, Enci delivered a passionate performance. Her take on the complex and troubled Paulina was authentic, and her accent, for me at least, added an extra sense of vulnerability to the character. Eric Johnson turned in a truthful, steady performance as Gerard, the pragmatic, loving husband who tries to stop his wife from murdering an "innocent" man. And Benton Jennings' portrayal of Dr. Miranda was outstanding, intelligently shifting the character in-and-out of the shadows, between the terrified and confused victim and the evil doctor who tortured Paulina - deftly keeping the audience guessing about his role in the former regime. Not for the squeamish or those who require a tidy, sewn-up ending, Death and the Maiden is a thought-provoking study into the limits of humanity in an ever-changing and often violent world. It requires more than competent actors, and this production had us talking outside the theatre for almost an hour after the show ended. - Margie R. Kevin S An excellent production, start to finish. We were very impressed by the quality of the acting, the staging, everything. A very intimate theatre experience with friendly and professional support staff as well as the actors in the play itself. My wife and I highly recommend it!

Description
DEATH AND THE MAIDEN”
"People can die from an excessive dose of the truth, you know."
Directed by Dado
Starring: ENCI, ERIC CURTIS JOHNSON, and BENTON JENNINGS.
* Ariel Dorfman's ..Death and the Maiden.. is an emotionally charged moral confrontation between a former political prisoner and the man she
believes to have been her torturer.
* Produced by SkyPilot Theatre Company, who brought
you last year’s critically acclaimed TAKING SIDES by
Ronald Harwood; previous celebrated productions include
HELLCAB by Will Kern and REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT
by Rod Serling.
When Ariel Dorfman’s Death And The Maiden first
premiered in 1991 at The Royal Court in London, The
Sunday Times (London) called it “a terrifying moral
thriller which combines brilliant theatricality with clear
thought and fierce compassion."
Ferociously paced and filled with deadly surprises,
Death And The Maiden explores a darker side of
humanity-- wherein justice itself comes to seem like a
brittle, even problematic creation.
“This play is frighteningly relevant given the moral and
political challenges we’ve faced individually and collectively
over the past few years,” says director Dado. “We are
quite fortunate to be in a position to stage this important play against the current backdrop of political turmoil.”
