Event details: DEATH AND THE MAIDEN on stage
Description
"People can die from an excessive dose of the truth, you know."
Directed by Dado
Starring: ENCI, ERIC CURTIS JOHNSON, and BENTON JENNINGS.
* Ariel Dorfman's ..Death and the Maiden.. is an emotionally charged moral confrontation between a former political prisoner and the man she
believes to have been her torturer.
* Produced by SkyPilot Theatre Company, who brought
you last year’s critically acclaimed TAKING SIDES by
Ronald Harwood; previous celebrated productions include
HELLCAB by Will Kern and REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT
by Rod Serling.
When Ariel Dorfman’s Death And The Maiden first
premiered in 1991 at The Royal Court in London, The
Sunday Times (London) called it “a terrifying moral
thriller which combines brilliant theatricality with clear
thought and fierce compassion."
Ferociously paced and filled with deadly surprises,
Death And The Maiden explores a darker side of
humanity-- wherein justice itself comes to seem like a
brittle, even problematic creation.
“This play is frighteningly relevant given the moral and
political challenges we’ve faced individually and collectively
over the past few years,” says director Dado. “We are
quite fortunate to be in a position to stage this important play against the current backdrop of political turmoil.”

AUDIENCE SAYS (on Goldstar) -Death and the Maiden at the Sidewalk Studio Theater was an intense, tightly-woven production with solid performances by all three cast members. The entire play occurs in one room, but the story is gripping and builds so relentlessly that my hands were literally balled-up into fists for the last third of the play. Good production value and a small theatre also really helped to immerse me in the experience. In the role of Paulina, Enci delivered a passionate performance. Her take on the complex and troubled Paulina was authentic, and her accent, for me at least, added an extra sense of vulnerability to the character. Eric Johnson turned in a truthful, steady performance as Gerard, the pragmatic, loving husband who tries to stop his wife from murdering an "innocent" man. And Benton Jennings' portrayal of Dr. Miranda was outstanding, intelligently shifting the character in-and-out of the shadows, between the terrified and confused victim and the evil doctor who tortured Paulina - deftly keeping the audience guessing about his role in the former regime. Not for the squeamish or those who require a tidy, sewn-up ending, Death and the Maiden is a thought-provoking study into the limits of humanity in an ever-changing and often violent world. It requires more than competent actors, and this production had us talking outside the theatre for almost an hour after the show ended. - Margie R. Kevin S An excellent production, start to finish. We were very impressed by the quality of the acting, the staging, everything. A very intimate theatre experience with friendly and professional support staff as well as the actors in the play itself. My wife and I highly recommend it!
