The Applebutterfest 33 YEARS OF MAKING MEMORIES & APPLE BUTTER Sunday, October 11, 2009 Applebutter Country Crafts Demonstrators Entertainment Farm Displays Flea Market Food Music Re-enactment Groups And Much More! roman timesOn Sunday October 11, 2009, the Historical Society of Grand Rapids will be sponsoring its annual Applebutter Fest from l0AM to 5PM. You, your friends, and your family can spend the day with us while we celebrate the harvest season and all of its history, glory and tradition. While at the festival there is easily a day's worth of activity to be seen, heard and enjoyed. Applebutter is the main feature with three 50 gallon copper kettles being cooked in the village park by the restored Town Hall. More than 2,300 pints of applebutter will be for sale at the park. Be sure to get yours early - they go fast! You can even join in on the fun of giving a kettle a stir and experiencing the camaraderie as neighbors did years ago. Just speak up and join in. All are welcome. This festival is especially well known for the history it presents both through 100+ juried craftsmen and the demonstrations & presentations that occur throughout the day. This history-based day will be filled with re-enactors and volunteers doing demonstrations of pioneer skills such as candle dipping, blacksmithing, pottery making, basket weaving, quilt making and metal spinning. Out on the towpath military groups will be going through their paces and demonstrating the arms and weapons of their various time periods. Fire in the hole: be sure to catch the cannon demonstrations out over the Maumee River! Along with the military folks will be mountainmen and settlers heading west for the wilderness of the Northwest Territory. They're a talkative bunch and enjoy a good chat with the flatlanders. Be sure to stop and ask questions. A variety of entertainment abounds this day in Grand Rapids. Two main stages will host a variety of entertainment venues throughout the course of the day. You'll likely hear bluegrass, Dixieland, country, and gospel music as you stroll through the village. As the Applebutter is being stirred the Linenkugels Dulcimer Family will be performing in Town Hall Park. The sounds of banjos, fiddles, guitars and folk music will also entertain all who pass through this corridor of history. Everything from magicians to mimes to harmonica players to caricaturists to storytellers to face painting can be found on our two mini-stages and in the Children's Area. For the child in all of us there is an area where steam-fired water pumps, traction engines, and other antique farm machinery are displayed. There's also a sheep-sheerer and a steam corn sheller. Outside of but near the downtown area are crafts and collectibles markets. Be sure to visit these areas for great bargains on beautiful handicrafts and antiques & collectibles. Also visit the giant Book Sale at the local library. Located throughout the Fest you will have the opportunity to experience and sample many food concessions. The Historical Society limits concessions to local, not-for-profit organizations so that they may have an opportunity to earn funds to conduct their yearly programs. Each of these various booths will be displaying a large red apple sign that declares it as an "Official ABF Food Booth". Your patronage of these "official" booths will be deeply appreciated. Organizations such as the Scouts, Otsego Music Boosters, Athletic Boosters, Community Swimming Pool, Fire Department, Otsego FFA, Otsego Cheerleaders, Chamber of Commerce, and others rely on this event as their premier fund raiser each year. Please support these Official Vendors! The purpose of the Applebutter Fest is to provide a living history event where visitors can witness accurate episodes of life portrayed along the Maumee River a century or more ago. The Applebutter Fest is all of that and a lot more, too. Its a great time in a great place at a great price. Please come join us! THE ONLY ADMISSION FEE TO THE APPLEBUTTER FEST IS THE $7.00 PARKING FEE! COME JOIN US!
