      First All-Day Tokyo Shape-Note Singing

      Sing to your heart’s content through shape notes, the ingenious early American invention that attached a different shape to each note of the musical scale. Easy to learn, shape notes allow for a virtual flash mob of glorious 4-part a cappella harmony. The traditional notation of hymnals in certain Protestant sects from 1800 onward, shape notes can be used to notate any music, sacred or secular. We sing from the Sacred Harp, Christian Harmony, as well as transcriptions of old Japanese and foreign songs into shape notes, hiragana, and roman letters. It’s communal singing the way generations past cherished, and it’s still good for the soul and body today.
