Maple Weekend! Hi, I just got word that because of last week's storm, the Niese's have to cancel our scheduled event for Sunday, March 7. Poor guys, lots of trees and wires down. A big mess. HOWEVER... I rescheduled for Sunday, March 21, 10am. It does fall on Maple Weekend, which will feature all sorts of other activities, like blacksmithing demos. But we will get there early and Dori has promised us our own sugar house tour, away from the crowds. This is really the last opportunity to check out sap flowing from the trees, because as it gets warmer, the trees stop running. So please recommit or change your RSVP for this event. ________________________________________________________________ Did you know that New York State is the second only to Vermont as the largest maple syrup supplier in the nation? And the third largest in the world (Canada is first). I am hooked on maple syrup. I use it on my oatmeal, sometimes in my tea, and as a sugar replacement in baking. Let's go visit Niese's in nearby Putnam Valley (just north of Peekskill) before the mad rush of Maple Weekend (March 20-21 and 28-29), and get the lowdown on how to tap and process the sweet syrup that only Mother Nature can provide. After the tour we'll chow down on some pancakes or french toast and locally made sausage and bacon (if you so desire). Products to take home from the farm store. If some people are up for it, we can do a hike in neighboring Fahnestock. Note: Seating is outside, so inclement weather cancels. Bathroom facilities are a port-o-potty. Cost: $6-8/person, depending on what you order for breakfast. Tour is free. Please RSVP by February 26 so that I can make reservations. This place books fast.
