Description

Verdi's opera "Un Ballo in Maschera" will be premiered in a new production at the Estonian National Opera.

The opera, with a libretto by Antonio Somma, is about passion, love, political intrigue, and people stuck in the labyrinth of life. The music by Verdi conveys the plot in an authentic, human and timeless way that it makes it hard to believe that 150 years have passed since the world premiere of the opera.

The complex figure of Gustavus III of Sweden (1796-1792) and his assassination at a masked ball on March 16, 1792, have provided material for various interpretations and heated disputes. In 19th century Italy, characterised by the spirit of reunification, cultural life was shaped by censors who found political pretexts for banning the opera. Nevertheless, it is not the political story, but rather the depiction of love and deep feelings that makes the opera by Verdi so memorable.
