      Rhythmic Roots: Fundamentals of Rhythm

      This class is designed to instruct and inform students about critical aspects of playing traditional West African drum rhythms.

      Students will be introduced to different types of African drums and how to work as a unit to express these tradition West African rhythms. The class will in part focus on the origin and purpose of Kuku and Kassa. By the end of this class, students will be able to properly execute three basic techniques: calls and breaks, Kuku and Kassa Rhythms. Students will also obtain knowledge about proper storage of the drum and tuning techniques.

      -Discuss origin of Kuku and Kassa
      -Discuss storage and tuning of djembe
      -Focus on three basic djembe techniques
      -Practice calls and breaks
      -Practice Kassa rhythm
      -Practice Kuku rhythm

      Time:
      1.5 hours
      10-minute break – Bring snacks & reusable water bottle

      Meet the Instructor: Robert Allen
      Rhythmic roots is a community-based organization that strives to reach out to local and surrounding communities to stimulate healing and self-expression amongst all participants. Robert Allen founded Rhythmic Roots in the summer of 2018. Allen has drummed in the North Florida area for over 20 years. His involvement with Paralounge and Kuumba has guided him to traditional West African drum and dance. He has had pleasure to work under the direction of Natalie and Myron Jackson and the instruction of Master drummer, Papa Cheikh N’Dong with Kuumba in Tampa Florida. In addition to Allen’s background in West African drumming, he also builds and repairs djembes.

      Cost: Payment required - $15 GA $10 Student $5 drum rental
