Start the New Year off with a random act of kindness! World Runners are looking for help for their upcoming Run for a Healthy World event on New Year's Day. 7-10/11a.m. Volunteer opportunities include: Race Registration, Preregistered check in, and Tee Shirt hand out, Food and water tables and the finish line bib hand-in. This is the fourth annual Run for a Healthy World on New Year's Day. The New Year' Day race will start and end at the Palo Alto Baylands Athletic Center. There will be a 5K run/walk and a 10K run. Both are on flat courses run mostly through the marsh lands on a mix of levee trails, dirt and paved roads. The proceeds from this event will support the education of young women in Africa, microfinance in Central America and the Second Harvest Food Bank. World Runners is unique among nonprofit institutions. The organization is interested in the fitness of both its members and its beneficiaries. However, there is a difference in emphasis on the type of fitness between the two groups. Physical fitness is the main interest for the member and financial fitness for the beneficiaries. It's become increasingly clear that poverty was one of the prime reasons for the persistence of hunger. People with means seemed to be able to feed themselves regardless of where they lived. The key link in the persistence of hunger seemed to be poverty and people lacking economic empowerment. And, what better way to end poverty than through microcredit and education. Special instructions: Warm clothing and if rain is forecast rain gear (in case of rain the registration tables will be under a roof in the ball park grand stands. Plenty of parking is available in lots on Geng Road within a few hundred feet of the registration area.
