When Josie Welford settles in the idyllic West Country village of Kings Duncombe, she honestly believes she can bury her past. The widow of one of Britain's most wanted criminals, she knows what it's like to be an outsider and fervently wishes for a fresh start in life. She is determined that this new venture will prove to be both a financial and a social success. And it seems that Josie has achieved what she set out to do; by becoming the licensee of the local pub she becomes a thriving and welcome member of the small community. That is until Inspector Nick Thomas, the man who put her husband in jail, appears on the scene. But Nick is no longer after Josie and the money he believes her late husband had stashed away: he is now an inspector for the Foods Standards Agency. In his new position he advises Josie to change from her local suppliers. How could Josie ever have foreseen the terrible consequences of this simple decision? Very soon she finds herself an outcast once more, ostracized by her erstwhile friendly neighbors. Even her employees are being warned off. Her hopes of a new life in tatters, she hears that the local vet has disappeared. Could the two things be connected? And why does everybody act as though they have a secret to hide? Bringing a reluctant Nick on the case, Josie prepares to investigateâ¦
