“Harmonica master Musselwhite sets the standard for blues.” —Rolling Stone
An authentic bluesman whose fame is as wide as his roots are humble, Charlie Musselwhite came up in Memphis and Chicago, where he befriended and sat in with blues greats such as Furry Lewis, Muddy Waters, and Howlin’ Wolf. Called “the undisputed champion of the blues harmonica” by DownBeat Magazine, Charlie rocketed to stardom in the ’60s as an unintentional icon of the counterculture. Beloved around the world, his latest CD, The Well, is considered one of his strongest. A longtime SJW faculty member, bassist Ruth Davies has serious credentials in blues and jazz. A short list of the artists she’s toured or recorded with includes John Lee Hooker, Charles Brown, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Maria Muldar, Jimmy Witherspoon, Clark Terry, and Elvin Bishop. Ruth’s Blues Night at the Stanford Jazz Festival has sold out nearly every year, thanks to her uncanny ability to put together backup bands that sound like headliners.
